An open circle of polished wire, and across its lower half a group of short vertical bars of different heights, rising and falling like a small skyline. Nothing else, and no stones.
Putting a rhythm inside a circle is a very old compositional idea and it works for a simple reason: the ring provides a fixed, familiar boundary, so the eye reads whatever is inside it as pattern rather than as random shapes. Here the bars rise to different heights in an irregular sequence, which gives the earring the quality of a waveform or a city skyline without actually depicting either.
The circle is smooth round wire with no visible join. The bars are flat, of varying height, and spaced slightly apart so light passes between them. They are fixed to the lower arc of the circle and rise towards the centre, leaving the upper half of the ring empty — that asymmetry is deliberate and stops the composition from settling into a symmetrical badge. Everything is rigid.
Nothing is set into the design, so there is no colour to coordinate and nothing to check. This is an earring you can wear without thinking about it.
Modern dressing — shirts, plain dresses, linen, co-ord sets, solid kurtas. The design is graphic and reads best against a plain background. It is compact enough for office wear and distinctive enough not to be forgettable. Hair up or down.
Parties, office, evenings and daily wear.
Light. Fine wire and thin flat bars weigh very little, and the rigid construction means nothing swings against the neck.
This piece is brass finished with a gold-tone plating rather than solid gold, which is what keeps the price where it is and the weight low enough for comfortable wear. Plating is a surface rather than a bulk property, so how long it lasts depends almost entirely on what it is exposed to. Perfume, hairspray, sweat, soap and chlorinated water all shorten its life; a dry cloth after wearing and a closed pouch between wearings extend it considerably. Treated sensibly, the colour holds for a long time.
Put these on after perfume, hairspray and foundation. Wipe with a dry soft cloth after wearing and use a dry soft brush around any stone settings and into textured areas. Store them in a pouch rather than loose in a box, and never use toothpaste, bleach or an ultrasonic cleaner.
