A row of stones across the top, beneath it two chevron tiers pointing downward and set with more stones, then a jhumka with a pearl fringe, and finally a chain that swags in a loop below hung with small bells. Available in Aqua, Baby Pink, Multi, White, Blue, Black, Yellow, Red, Green and Mint.
The two downward-pointing tiers do something useful: they narrow the earring progressively as it descends, funnelling the eye from the wide stone-set top down to the jhumka. Most multi-tier earrings keep the same width all the way down, which makes them read as a stack of separate objects. Tapering ties the sections into a single shape.
Each chevron is outlined in gold and set with a row of small stones along its upper edge, with pierced work filling the body so light passes through. The jhumka below is fluted with a close pearl fringe. The swag chain attaches at both sides and loops below the jhumka, hung at intervals with tiny bells, so there is movement beneath the rigid sections above. Gold tone throughout.
This design offers a Multi option, which carries several colours across the different tiers — useful when you want festive jewellery that does not need matching to a specific outfit. Red and Green are the traditional choices. Black and White are graphic. Aqua, Mint, Baby Pink, Blue and Yellow are the soft options.
Hair up, neck bare. These are elaborate and tall, so they want a plain outfit and nothing else competing. Silk, tissue and brocade all work. The swag chain means they finish lower than they first appear, so allow for that with a high neckline.
Weddings, receptions and major festivals.
Moderate. The chevrons are pierced and the jhumka is hollow, so the weight is lower than the size suggests, but this is an evening earring.
This piece is brass finished with a gold-tone plating rather than solid gold, which is what keeps the price where it is and the weight low enough for comfortable wear. Plating is a surface rather than a bulk property, so how long it lasts depends almost entirely on what it is exposed to. Perfume, hairspray, sweat, soap and chlorinated water all shorten its life; a dry cloth after wearing and a closed pouch between wearings extend it considerably. Treated sensibly, the colour holds for a long time.
Put these on after perfume, hairspray and foundation. Wipe with a dry soft cloth after wearing and use a dry soft brush around the stone settings and through any fringe or chain. Store them flat and on their own in a pouch so the chains do not tangle, and never use toothpaste, bleach or an ultrasonic cleaner.
