The chandbali takes its name from the crescent moon, and that shape is what gives this pair its presence. A curved frame opens out below a small decorative crown, its surface worked with dense traditional detailing, with small coloured stones set at intervals along the face and a soft pearl fringe strung along the lower edge. It is the most classically festive design in this group and also one of the lightest, at around nineteen grams for the pair, which matters when you are wearing something this size through a long evening. The oxidised finish keeps it looking like inherited silver rather than new costume jewellery.
Above the crescent sits a small arched crown holding a coloured stone, which acts as the anchor point on the ear. The crescent itself is filled with raised floral and filigree work rather than left flat, and the darkened recesses between those raised lines are what give the piece its depth. Coloured stones are placed at the two upper corners and at the centre of the curve, so the colour is distributed across the shape instead of being concentrated in one place. Round pearl beads hang from the lower rim in a graduated line that follows the curve of the crescent.
Chandbalis are meant to be seen, so wear your hair up or pulled back on at least one side. They carry a saree beautifully and sit just as well with a sharara or an anarkali. The one rule worth following is to keep the neckline quiet: either skip the necklace or wear something that sits high and close to the throat, because a long pendant will crowd the curve of the earring. If you are matching to an outfit, the Red and Black options are the most traditional and the Mint and Aqua shades read lighter and more contemporary.
Weddings, receptions, festive evenings, sangeet functions and Karwa Chauth. They are also a safe gift for someone who wears traditional jewellery regularly, since the chandbali is a shape almost every collection has room for.
Oxidised silver holds its character as long as it stays dry. Wear them after perfume and hair spray have settled, remove them before washing, swimming or sleeping, and wipe them with a soft dry cloth when you take them off. Store the pair flat in a pouch so the fringe does not tangle with other jewellery. Do not use chemical dips or polishing liquids on this finish, because they will lift the darkened tone out of the filigree recesses and flatten the whole design.
