A circular crescent top with a dark stone at its centre and a complete ring of tiny pearls around its edge sits at the lobe, and below it hangs an open umbrella frame of curved ribs with a single pearl at the tip of each.
Most jhumkas are solid domes. This one is built as an open frame — the ribs curve outward from a central crown and stop, with nothing filling the gaps between them, and a pearl hangs where each rib ends. The effect is considerably lighter both visually and physically: you can see through the earring, so it never looks heavy against the neck, and the pearls sit at the ends of the ribs rather than hanging below the rim, which means they stay in a neat circle instead of swinging as a fringe.
The top is a chand — a crescent form — rendered as a near-circle with a dark cabochon at the centre and a ring of seedpearl around the outside. The contrast between that densely worked top and the deliberately empty umbrella below is the point of the design: the eye gets one solid, detailed element and one open, airy one, and reads them as a pair.
Hair up. The openwork makes these easier to wear than their size suggests, so they will not overwhelm a cotton saree or a simple kurta the way a solid jhumka of the same dimensions would. Keep the neckline fairly simple.
Festivals, pujas, daytime functions, mehendis and family gatherings.
Lighter than it looks. The umbrella is a frame rather than a solid dome, so there is far less metal than the silhouette suggests.
This piece is brass finished with a gold-tone plating rather than solid gold, which is what keeps the price where it is and the weight low enough for comfortable wear. Plating is a surface rather than a bulk property, so how long it lasts depends almost entirely on what it is exposed to. Perfume, hairspray, sweat, soap and chlorinated water all shorten its life; a dry cloth after wearing and a closed pouch between wearings extend it considerably.
Put these on after perfume, hairspray and foundation. Wipe with a dry soft cloth after wearing and use a dry soft brush between the pearl drops and inside the bell, where a cloth cannot reach. Hang or lay them flat in a pouch so the fringe is not crushed, and never use toothpaste, bleach or an ultrasonic cleaner.
