A square stone in deep maroon sits at the centre, its surface carved with a flower in relief, surrounded by a ring of large clear kundan stones set as petals in raised gold beds.
Available in 8 colours: Maroon, Teal Green, Yellow, Peach, Pink, Baby Pink, Green and Red. The colour refers to the carved centre stone.
The carving is what sets these apart from an ordinary stone stud. Rather than a flat or domed surface, the centre stone has a flower cut into it in relief, so it catches light and shadow across its face and looks quite different depending on the angle. Carved stones are a Mughal technique, and they give a piece an antique quality that polished stones cannot.
Ringing it with large clear kundan rather than small ones is the other good decision. Fewer, bigger surrounding stones read as more confident than a dense cluster, and they leave the carved centre plenty of room.
Square centre inside a round border, which is a satisfying combination — the corners of the stone break the circle just enough to stop the earring reading as a plain disc.
Post fitting, flat against the lobe, nothing hanging. Light and comfortable for a full day, with nothing to catch on a dupatta.
These are the kind of studs that work almost anywhere — a saree, a kurta, a dress. Because they are compact and flat, they also pair well with a heavy necklace, where a long earring would compete. Hair up or down both work.
Carving a stone rather than faceting it is an old approach associated with Mughal jewellery, where emeralds and rubies were often cut with floral designs rather than for maximum sparkle. The intention is different: a faceted stone is meant to flash, while a carved one is meant to be looked at closely and to show the hand of the maker. It is why carved stones read as heirloom pieces even when the stone itself is modest, and why they suit traditional dressing so naturally.
These also make a particularly good gift. A compact stud needs no size, works for most ages, and suits both traditional and western dressing, which removes nearly every way a jewellery gift can go wrong. The carved stone gives it enough character to feel considered rather than generic, and eight colours means there is a version for most tastes.
Keep them in a zip lock pouch so the carved surface is not scratched. Put them on after perfume and hairspray, wipe with a dry soft cloth, and keep them away from water.
