A small flower at the lobe, a butterfly with stone-set wings beneath it, and from that three long fine chains descending, each carrying clusters of tiny bells at intervals down its length. Available in Green, Mint, Red, Yellow, Aqua, Grey, Black, Baby Pink and Blue.
Most Kashmiri earrings use two chains. A third changes the proportion noticeably — the fall becomes a column rather than a pair of lines, and because the three are cut to slightly different lengths they never hang in a flat plane. From the front the earring reads as a soft vertical shimmer rather than as two distinct strands, which is a richer effect for very little extra material.
The butterfly is modelled with its wings spread and set with small coloured stones, sitting below a plain flower stud that keeps the lobe end tidy. The three chains hang free of one another so they move independently. Bell clusters are attached at graduated intervals, with the largest group at the end of each chain, which is what keeps them hanging straight. The finish is a warm gold, polished rather than antiqued, which suits the lighter motif.
Green and Red are the traditional choices. Black and Grey read as modern. Mint, Aqua, Baby Pink and Yellow are the soft options, and Blue sits between. The colour is in the butterfly's wings.
Hair up and secured. The butterfly makes this the least formal of the Kashmiri designs here, so it works for festivals and daytime functions as well as weddings, and it suits a younger wearer particularly well. Neck bare or a very fine chain.
Weddings, festivals, sangeets and daytime functions.
Light. The butterfly is small, the chains are fine and the bells are tiny, so the lobe carries very little despite the length.
This piece is brass finished with a gold-tone plating rather than solid gold, which is what keeps the price where it is and the weight low enough for comfortable wear. Plating is a surface rather than a bulk property, so how long it lasts depends almost entirely on what it is exposed to. Perfume, hairspray, sweat, soap and chlorinated water all shorten its life; a dry cloth after wearing and a closed pouch between wearings extend it considerably. Treated sensibly, the colour holds for a long time.
Put these on after perfume, hairspray and foundation. Wipe with a dry soft cloth after wearing and use a dry soft brush around the stone settings and through any fringe or chain. Store them flat and on their own in a pouch so the chains do not tangle, and never use toothpaste, bleach or an ultrasonic cleaner.
