A small decorated flower sits at the lobe with a coloured stone at its centre, and below it a butterfly spreads its wings, each wing set with a rectangular stone, with a short fringe of tiny pearls along the lower edge.
The butterfly is a difficult motif because it tips into sweetness so easily. What saves this one is the treatment: the wings are set with proper rectangular stones in bezels rather than being enamelled in bright colour, and the whole thing sits in an antique gold finish rather than a bright polish. The result reads as traditional Indian jewellery that happens to use a butterfly, not as a novelty piece.
The upper flower is small and tidy, keeping the attachment point neat. The butterfly below is modelled with raised wing edges and fine detailing on the body, and each wing carries a rectangular stone set flush. Beneath, a short row of tiny pearls hangs on individual links — just enough to add movement without turning a compact earring into a drop. The antique finish is darkened in the recesses so the modelling reads clearly.
Compact enough for daily wear and detailed enough for a function. These suit cotton and silk, work with loose hair since nothing hangs far, and sit comfortably under a dupatta. A good everyday pair for someone who finds plain studs dull.
Daily wear, office, festivals and daytime functions.
Light and short. The pearl fringe is tiny and the butterfly sits close to the lobe, so there is no drag and nothing to tangle in hair.
This piece is brass finished with a gold-tone plating rather than solid gold, which is what keeps the price where it is and the weight low enough for comfortable wear. Plating is a surface rather than a bulk property, so how long it lasts depends almost entirely on what it is exposed to. Perfume, hairspray, sweat, soap and chlorinated water all shorten its life; a dry cloth after wearing and a closed pouch between wearings extend it considerably. Treated sensibly, the colour holds for a long time.
Put these on after perfume, hairspray and foundation. Wipe with a dry soft cloth after wearing and use a dry soft brush around the stone settings and through any fringe. Store them in a pouch rather than loose in a box, and never use toothpaste, bleach or an ultrasonic cleaner.
