A round stone sits at the lobe with a small gold leaf sprig beside it, and below hangs an open rectangular panel filled with stems and leaves worked in flat gold, with small stones set among the foliage. Available in Red, Black, Grey, Blue, Green, Yellow, Baby Pink, Mint and Aqua.
Putting an organic subject inside a hard rectangular border is an old device in Indian art — Mughal miniatures do exactly this, containing a wild garden within a precise frame. The tension between the straight edges and the curving stems is what makes both read more strongly. On an earring it also solves a practical problem: foliage alone would have a ragged outline, while the frame gives it a clean silhouette.
The frame is a plain flat rectangle with squared corners. Inside it, stems rise from the lower edge carrying pointed leaves at intervals, cut from flat sheet and set at slight angles so they catch light differently from one another. Small round stones sit among the leaves like berries. Most of the rectangle is left empty, which is what keeps the panel light and lets the frame read as a window rather than a plate.
Red and Green are the deepest and most traditional. Black and Grey are the most graphic. Blue, Yellow, Baby Pink, Mint and Aqua are the lighter options. The colour applies to the top stone and the small stones set among the foliage.
These work with both modern and traditional clothing — the botanical subject is familiar enough for a saree, the rectangular frame modern enough for a shirt. Hair up to show the full panel. Keep the necklace simple.
Parties, evenings, festivals and daytime functions.
Light. The panel is mostly open space and cut from thin sheet, so despite covering a reasonable area it weighs very little and hangs flat rather than projecting.
This piece is brass finished with a gold-tone plating rather than solid gold, which is what keeps the price where it is and the weight low enough for comfortable wear. Plating is a surface rather than a bulk property, so how long it lasts depends almost entirely on what it is exposed to. Perfume, hairspray, sweat, soap and chlorinated water all shorten its life; a dry cloth after wearing and a closed pouch between wearings extend it considerably. Treated sensibly, the colour holds for a long time.
Put these on after perfume, hairspray and foundation. Wipe with a dry soft cloth after wearing and use a dry soft brush around the stone settings and into any textured areas. Store them in a pouch rather than loose in a box, and never use toothpaste, bleach or an ultrasonic cleaner.
