A round stud carrying one deep blue cabochon at its centre sits at the lobe, and below it hangs a fluted gold bell with a single row of pearls at the rim.
There is exactly one stone on this earring. That is a deliberate choice rather than an economy: a single large cabochon in the middle of a plain gold disc reads far more strongly than the same area covered in small stones, because the eye has nothing to compare it to and nothing to divide its attention. The blue sits at the top where it is closest to the face, and everything below it is plain gold — so the colour registers immediately and the bell is read as shape rather than as decoration.
The stud is a plain round disc with a stepped bezel holding the stone, and a narrow beaded border around the outside that keeps it from looking bare. The bell beneath is fluted, with vertical ribs running from crown to rim, and the pearls hang in an even single row. Nothing is enamelled, textured or antiqued — the surface is polished gold throughout.
Blue is the easiest strong colour to place: it works with navy and indigo as a tonal match, with white and ivory as a contrast, and with yellow or mustard as an opposite. Hair up or to one side. A plain neckline lets the single stone carry the look.
Festivals, daytime functions, office wear, family gatherings and daily wear.
Light. One stone, a hollow bell and a single row of pearls — nothing adds unnecessary weight.
This piece is brass finished with a gold-tone plating rather than solid gold, which is what keeps the price where it is and the weight low enough for comfortable wear. Plating is a surface rather than a bulk property, so how long it lasts depends almost entirely on what it is exposed to. Perfume, hairspray, sweat, soap and chlorinated water all shorten its life; a dry cloth after wearing and a closed pouch between wearings extend it considerably.
Put these on after perfume, hairspray and foundation. Wipe with a dry soft cloth after wearing and use a dry soft brush between the pearl drops and inside the bell, where a cloth cannot reach. Hang or lay them flat in a pouch so the fringe is not crushed, and never use toothpaste, bleach or an ultrasonic cleaner.
Type: Jhumka earrings. Metal: Brass. Finish: Gold-tone plating. Work: Round stud with a bezel-set blue cabochon and beaded border, over a fluted bell with pearl fringe. Closure: Post and butterfly back.
