A shaped panel in glossy black enamel, painted across its face with pink and white blossoms and fine gold stems, outlined throughout in raised gold. Below hangs a short fringe of small black beads and white pearls.
Available in 6 colours: Baby Pink, Blue, Yellow, Grey, Black and Peach. The colour refers to the enamel ground.
Black enamel is rare in Indian festive jewellery and it does something none of the bright colours can: it makes everything painted on top of it glow. Pink blossoms on black read far more vividly than the same blossoms on cream or gold, because the contrast is at its maximum.
It also makes the pair unusually versatile. Black and gold works with a saree, with a plain black dress, and with western evening wear, which is not true of a bright pink or green equivalent.
Small five petal blossoms in pink and white, each with a painted centre, linked by thin gold stems that curl across the panel. The gold outlining around the whole design is raised slightly above the enamel, which catches light along every edge and keeps the black from reading as a flat void.
Narrower and taller than a classic wide chandbali, with a stepped outline rather than a smooth curve. That makes it sit closer to the face and hang more vertically, which suits a closed neckline better than a broad crescent would.
Post fitting, moderate size, light construction. Comfortable for a full evening and restrained enough to wear to a family function rather than only a wedding.
Black and gold suits almost anything, but it is at its best against cream, ivory, gold and deep red. Hair back so the painted panel is fully visible, and keep other jewellery minimal.
Most Indian jewellery collections are built around red, green and gold, which means almost everything has to be coordinated with the outfit. Black does not. It functions the way a black handbag does — it goes with what you already own, it never competes, and it crosses between traditional and western dressing without looking out of place in either. If you are adding one more festive pair and already own the bright colours, black is usually the most useful gap to fill.
Store them in their own pouch so the enamel is not chipped. Put them on after perfume and hairspray, wipe with a dry soft cloth, and keep them away from water.
