A stone in a pearl-edged setting sits at the lobe, below it an open arched frame of plain gold encloses empty space, and at the base a crescent set with stones and edged with pearls closes the design. Available in Yellow, Red, Aqua and Blue.
The arched frame in the centre holds nothing at all. That emptiness is doing real work: it separates two heavily decorated elements so neither crowds the other, and it lets skin show through the middle of the earring, which breaks up what would otherwise be a solid column of gold and stone. Leaving space in the middle of a traditional earring is an unusual decision and the most interesting thing about this one.
The top is a small stone surrounded by a ring of tiny pearls. The arch below is formed from plain gold bars meeting at a soft point, deliberately undecorated. The crescent at the base is set with coloured stones along its face, bordered with pearls around the outer curve and finished with a short pearl fringe. The three sections are linked so the crescent swings beneath the rigid arch.
Yellow is the warmest and sits closest to the gold. Red is the most traditional. Aqua and Blue are the cooler options and show the stone's glow most clearly against the pale pearls.
Hair up, neck bare or a fine chain. These suit silk, cotton and handloom and are formal enough for a function without being bridal. The open centre keeps them looking lighter than most earrings of this length.
Parties, festivals, weddings as a guest and daytime functions.
Moderate and well balanced. The empty arch contributes almost no weight, and the mass that exists sits low where the earring hangs cleanly.
This piece is brass finished with a gold-tone plating rather than solid gold, which is what keeps the price where it is and the weight low enough for comfortable wear. Plating is a surface rather than a bulk property, so how long it lasts depends almost entirely on what it is exposed to. Perfume, hairspray, sweat, soap and chlorinated water all shorten its life; a dry cloth after wearing and a closed pouch between wearings extend it considerably.
Put these on after perfume, hairspray and foundation. Wipe with a dry soft cloth after wearing and use a dry soft brush around the stone settings and through any fringe. Store them in a pouch rather than loose in a box, and never use toothpaste, bleach or an ultrasonic cleaner.
