A large round cat's-eye stone sits at the centre, and on each side a set of concentric arcs radiates outward like ripples, with a straight bar running across the whole width behind them. Available in Baby Pink, Yellow, Blue, Black, Red, Green, Grey, Mint and Aqua.
The repeated arcs do something a solid frame could not: they make the stone look like the origin of a disturbance, as though the metal is rippling outward from it. Concentric lines read as energy rather than as decoration, which is why the device turns up so often in Art Deco jewellery and in architecture of the same period. It also means the earring is wide without being heavy, since the arcs are mostly air.
The stone is a smooth domed cabochon with the single travelling band of light that defines a cat's eye, set in a plain bezel so nothing interrupts the dome. The arcs are fine flat strips, three or four to each side, spaced so light passes between them. A straight bar spans the full width behind the arcs, tying the two halves together and giving the piece a horizontal axis. The back is flat with a centred post.
The stone is large and central, so the colour dominates. Black and Grey are the most graphic. Red and Green are the deepest. Baby Pink, Mint, Aqua, Blue and Yellow are the softer options, and a cat's-eye stone in a pale colour has a particular milky glow worth seeing in the photographs.
These sit flat and wide, so they work with loose hair, high necklines and under a dupatta. The Deco geometry suits modern clothing best, though the warm gold keeps them from looking out of place with a plain silk. Keep the necklace simple.
Parties, office, evenings and daytime functions.
Very good for the width. The arcs are mostly open space, nothing hangs, and the flat back means the weight sits on the lobe rather than pulling down.
This piece is brass finished with a gold-tone plating rather than solid gold, which is what keeps the price where it is and the weight low enough for comfortable wear. Plating is a surface rather than a bulk property, so how long it lasts depends almost entirely on what it is exposed to. Perfume, hairspray, sweat, soap and chlorinated water all shorten its life; a dry cloth after wearing and a closed pouch between wearings extend it considerably. Treated sensibly, the colour holds for a long time.
Put these on after perfume, hairspray and foundation. Wipe with a dry soft cloth after wearing and use a dry soft brush around the stone settings and into textured areas. Store them in a pouch rather than loose in a box, and never use toothpaste, bleach or an ultrasonic cleaner.
