A hasli is a rigid, curved collar necklace with a long history in Indian jewellery, and this one has an unusual woven texture that makes it stand out. It comes with a pair of matching flower stud earrings and fastens with an adjustable thread. This listing shows the red-and-green version; it is also available in Blue, Multi Color and Turquoise.
The collar is made of curved sections with a basket-weave pattern, like finely plaited gold, joined so the necklace follows the line of the collarbone. Along the front sit small stones framed in seed pearls, alternating red and green, with a crescent motif near the centre holding pink and green stones. The ends finish in smooth tubes that connect to a golden cord with pearl and bead tassels. The earrings are round golden flowers with pierced petals around a pearl-framed red stone.
A hasli sits close to the neck, so it looks best with boat, round or deep V necklines and with sarees worn with a fitted blouse. Wear it for weddings, pujas and festive dinners, with your hair up to show the full curve. Pair with gold bangles for a complete traditional look.
The collar has a fixed curve that rests around the base of the neck, and the adjustable thread at the back lets you set how closely it sits. The flower studs are a medium size with push-back closures. The set is comfortable for a full function.
This is brass with a gold-tone plating rather than solid gold, which keeps the price where it is and the weight low enough to wear comfortably. Plating is a surface rather than a bulk property, so how long it lasts depends almost entirely on what it meets — perfume, hairspray and sweat all shorten it, while a dry cloth after wearing and a closed pouch between wearings extend it considerably.
Put this on after perfume, hairspray and hand cream, and take it off before washing, swimming or sleeping. Wipe with a dry soft cloth and use a dry soft brush around the stone settings and between any pearls, where a cloth cannot reach. Store it in a zip-lock pouch — which is what the supplier themselves advise, and the single most effective thing for a plated piece, because it keeps humid air off the metal. Never use silver polish, dip cleaners or an ultrasonic cleaner.
