A domed circular ornament carries a red stone at its centre with pointed kundan petals radiating around it and a complete border of small pearls. It hangs from a short pearl strand ending in a hair hook. Roughly 4 inches overall — the smallest borla in the range.
At 4 inches this is noticeably shorter than the 5-inch borlas, and that changes where it sits. A shorter chain places the dome higher on the forehead, closer to the hairline, which is the more restrained position and the easier one to wear with a smaller face or an everyday outfit. The longer versions drop the ornament towards the brow, which reads as bridal.
The kundan stones are cut as pointed petals rather than round, and they radiate outward from the red centre. A radial arrangement has no top or bottom, so the dome still reads correctly however it settles on the chain — which matters, because a borla turns freely where a flat tikka does not.
Being domed rather than flat, it has no single correct viewing angle: it holds its appearance in profile as well as face-on. On a piece worn at the hairline, where photographs are as often taken from the side, that is the whole advantage of the shape.
A centre parting is needed. The hook slides into the hair at the parting, the dome rests on the forehead, and the chain should lie flat rather than being pulled tight.
The smaller size makes it the easiest borla here for a daytime function or a simpler outfit. Red and gold suits bandhani, leheriya, Banarasi and maroon.
Weddings, festivals, daytime functions, sangeets and traditional dress.
Type: Borla maang tikka. Metal: Copper base. Work: Domed face with a red centre, kundan petals and pearl border, on a pearl chain. Size: approximately 4 inches overall.
This is brass with a gold-tone plating rather than solid gold, which keeps the price where it is and the weight low enough to wear comfortably. Plating is a surface rather than a bulk property, so how long it lasts depends almost entirely on what it meets — perfume, hairspray and sweat all shorten it, while a dry cloth after wearing and a closed pouch between wearings extend it considerably.
Put this on after perfume, hairspray and hand cream, and take it off before washing, swimming or sleeping. Wipe with a dry soft cloth and use a dry soft brush around the stone settings and between any pearls, where a cloth cannot reach. Store it in a zip-lock pouch — which is what the supplier themselves advise, and the single most effective thing for a plated piece, because it keeps humid air off the metal. Never use silver polish, dip cleaners or an ultrasonic cleaner.
