A round enamel panel painted with a peacock sits at the centre of a gold face, framed by kundan leaves and small coloured stones, with ghungroo bells hanging beneath. Roughly 4.5 inches overall.
Most peacock jewellery casts or cuts the bird in metal. Here it is painted in enamel inside a round panel, which is a completely different technique and a much rarer one on a piece this small — the bird has to be rendered in coloured enamel within a space barely a centimetre across, with the metal cell walls doing the drawing. It is closer to miniature painting than to metalwork.
The kundan leaves around the panel carry no colour of their own beyond small accent stones. That restraint is deliberate: a painted centre needs a quiet border or the two compete, and the whole point of the piece is the panel. A heavily coloured frame would reduce the peacock to one detail among many.
Small bells hang along the lower edge — the only moving part on an otherwise rigid ornament, and bright metal points rather than the soft ones a pearl fringe gives.
A centre parting is needed. The hook slides into the hair and the face rests on the forehead with the chain lying flat.
The painted centre rewards being seen close up, so this suits occasions where you are among people rather than across a hall. Keep the necklace simple.
Weddings, festivals, sangeets, daytime functions and traditional dress.
Type: Maang tikka. Metal: Brass base. Finish: Gold-tone plating with meenakari. Work: Painted peacock enamel centre with kundan frame and ghungroo drops. Size: approximately 4.5 inches.
This is brass with a gold-tone plating rather than solid gold, which keeps the price where it is and the weight low enough to wear comfortably. Plating is a surface rather than a bulk property, so how long it lasts depends almost entirely on what it meets — perfume, hairspray and sweat all shorten it, while a dry cloth after wearing and a closed pouch between wearings extend it considerably.
Put this on after perfume, hairspray and hand cream, and take it off before washing, swimming or sleeping. Wipe with a dry soft cloth and use a dry soft brush around the stone settings and between any pearls, where a cloth cannot reach. Store it in a zip-lock pouch — which is what the supplier themselves advise, and the single most effective thing for a plated piece, because it keeps humid air off the metal. Never use silver polish, dip cleaners or an ultrasonic cleaner.
