An eight-pointed star in gold tone, each point set with a clear kundan stone around a larger central stone, hangs from a fine gold chain with a single pearl dropping beneath. Roughly 5.4 inches overall.
A flower has rounded petals; a star has straight edges meeting at points. That one difference changes the whole register — the flower reads as organic and soft, the star as geometric and formal. On a forehead ornament the star also throws light differently: each straight edge catches a hard line of highlight where a curved petal gives a soft gradient, so a star tikka sparkles rather than glows.
Every stone is colourless, which is deliberate on a piece worn directly above the eyes. A strong colour there competes with the face in every photograph, while clear kundan gives brightness without a hue that has to be matched to the outfit. It is why colourless head ornaments go with everything you own.
A single pearl hangs below the star. A tikka is otherwise completely static — it is one of the few ornaments that cannot swing — so the drop is the only element that moves, and it finishes the vertical line rather than letting the piece simply stop.
A centre parting is needed. The hook slides into the hair at the parting and the star rests on the forehead with the chain lying flat.
With no colour to match it suits every outfit. Pair it with gold jewellery rather than silver, and keep the necklace simple — both sit in the same eyeline.
Weddings, receptions, festivals, sangeets and daytime functions.
Type: Maang tikka. Metal: Brass base. Finish: Gold-tone plating. Work: Eight-pointed star set with kundan, with a pearl drop, on a fine chain. Size: approximately 5.4 inches overall.
This is brass with a gold-tone plating rather than solid gold, which keeps the price where it is and the weight low enough to wear comfortably. Plating is a surface rather than a bulk property, so how long it lasts depends almost entirely on what it meets — perfume, hairspray and sweat all shorten it, while a dry cloth after wearing and a closed pouch between wearings extend it considerably.
Put this on after perfume, hairspray and hand cream, and take it off before washing, swimming or sleeping. Wipe with a dry soft cloth and use a dry soft brush around the stone settings and between any pearls, where a cloth cannot reach. Store it in a zip-lock pouch — which is what the supplier themselves advise, and the single most effective thing for a plated piece, because it keeps humid air off the metal. Never use silver polish, dip cleaners or an ultrasonic cleaner.
