An eight-petal flower in gold tone, each petal set with a clear AD stone around a larger central stone, hangs from a fine gold chain with a single pearl dropping beneath. Roughly 5.4 inches overall.
This is the flat pendant form rather than the domed Rajasthani borla. A flat tikka lies against the forehead instead of standing proud of it, which makes it lighter, less likely to shift as you move, and considerably easier to wear for a long function. It is the more common form across most of India.
Every stone on the piece is colourless. That is a deliberate choice rather than a plain one — a tikka sits directly above the eyes, and a strong colour there competes with the face in every photograph. Clear AD stones give brightness without adding a hue that has to be matched to the outfit, which is why colourless head ornaments go with everything.
A single pearl hangs below the flower. It gives the piece a point of movement — a tikka is otherwise completely static — and it finishes the vertical line so the ornament does not simply stop.
A centre parting is needed. The hook slides into the hair at the parting and the flower rests on the forehead with the chain lying flat.
With no colour to match it suits every outfit, which makes it the sensible choice if you are buying one tikka rather than several. It pairs with gold jewellery rather than silver.
Weddings, receptions, festivals, sangeets and daytime functions.
Type: Maang tikka. Metal: Brass base. Finish: Gold-tone plating. Work: Eight-petal flower set with AD stones, with a pearl drop, on a fine chain. Size: approximately 5.4 inches overall.
This is brass with a gold-tone plating rather than solid gold, which keeps the price where it is and the weight low enough to wear comfortably. Plating is a surface rather than a bulk property, so how long it lasts depends almost entirely on what it meets — perfume, hairspray and sweat all shorten it, while a dry cloth after wearing and a closed pouch between wearings extend it considerably.
Put this on after perfume, hairspray and hand cream, and take it off before washing, swimming or sleeping. Wipe with a dry soft cloth and use a dry soft brush around the stone settings and between any pearls, where a cloth cannot reach. Store it in a zip-lock pouch — which is what the supplier themselves advise, and the single most effective thing for a plated piece, because it keeps humid air off the metal. Never use silver polish, dip cleaners or an ultrasonic cleaner.
