A Brand of Keyura
On a fifteen to twenty inch deity the choti stops being a minor ornament and becomes a full length of worked metal running down the back of the braid. It is what you see when the idol is turned during aarti, and on larger swaroops a missing or undersized choti is immediately obvious. This is a deity choti for the fifteen to twenty inch range, offered in two designs.
Design A and Design 2 differ in the character of the work rather than the length or fit. Both are built the same way, as a graduated run of linked ornaments tapering from the crown of the braid down to a free-hanging jhumar at the end, and both fasten identically. Choosing between them is a matter of which pattern sits better against the poshak you usually dress your deity in, so devotees who dress for both festival and daily seva sometimes keep one of each.
The graduation is what makes a choti of this length work. Equal-sized units along a twenty inch run read as a chain rather than as shringar, and they swing badly when the idol is moved. Sizing each unit in sequence keeps the weight distributed towards the top and lets the lower section hang straight.
Fifteen to twenty inch is the deity height, measured from the base to the top of the head, not the length of the choti. For smaller idols the two inch and five to six number chotis in the Radha Rani range are the correct choice.
Fasten the topmost ornament where the hair is gathered and let the rest fall under its own weight rather than pinning it along the braid. Pinning fights the graduation and makes the lower section kink instead of hanging clean.
Store the choti hung or laid out straight, never coiled, because a coiled run of linked units takes a permanent set and will not hang straight afterwards. Dry cotton cloth only, drawn down the length rather than across it. Keep attar, loose kumkum and damp away from the settings and never use polish liquid.
Both designs sit in the Shubbushrii Radha Krishna accessories range at the same fit.
