These coin kadas come as a set of two and use the oldest decoration in tribal jewellery: rows of small metal discs stitched so they overlap like scales and move constantly. Each hoop is wrapped in blocks of coloured thread and ringed with these coin discs, with a bell and a cluster of coin drops hanging at the opening. Coin ornament runs through Banjara, Kutchi and Rajasthani jewellery, and it is worn as much for its sound as its appearance.
The hoop is wrapped tightly in cotton thread in blocks of yellow, green, red and deep blue, dense enough that the frame never shows through. Around the outer edge, stamped silver-tone discs are stitched in an overlapping row, each one hanging loose rather than fixed flat, so they shift and knock against one another with every movement of the arm. The discs are stamped with a simple pattern rather than left plain, which catches light as they turn. At the opening, a domed ghungroo hangs from a silver cap with more discs suspended beneath it. Silver beads sit between the thread blocks, marking the joins.
Coin jewellery is loud in both senses and works best with plain clothes: khadi, handloom, linen or denim, in a solid colour that lets the thread blocks show. Wear both on one wrist for the full effect, and pair them with oxidised jhumkas or other coin jewellery rather than with stones. They suit festival and performance wear far better than an office.
Navratri and garba, folk and classical dance, festivals, craft fairs and exhibitions, and gifting to someone who collects tribal jewellery or performs.
This piece is made in one free size rather than in bangle sizes. It is shaped to pass over the hand and sit loosely on the wrist, which is how this style is meant to be worn, so there is nothing to choose when you order.
Free size suits most adult wrists comfortably. It is not adjustable, so if your wrist is unusually slim or broad, message us on WhatsApp before ordering and we will tell you honestly whether it will sit well rather than take an order that comes back.
Do not wash these: water stains the cotton thread and rusts the stitching. Brush dust off with a soft dry brush. The coin discs hang loose and can catch on knitwear, so put the kadas on last and take them off before anything that might snag, and store them flat in a pouch so the tassel does not tangle.
