A wide flat cuff bangle in oxidised German silver over brass. The whole band is pierced as floral jali, with a small stone set at the centre of each flower.
Jali is pierced lattice work, borrowed from the stone screens of Mughal architecture, where a solid wall was cut away until light and air could pass through it. On a bangle it does the same two things: it makes a broad band weightless, and it lets the skin show through, so a cuff this wide reads as light rather than as an armoured strap.
The flowers repeat along the full width of the band rather than being gathered into a single centrepiece. That is the harder way to lay out a cuff — the pattern has to work from every angle as the wrist turns, with no front and no back.
Each flower carries a small stone at its centre. Set into a dark ground they read as points of colour rather than as sparkle, which is the right relationship on oxidised work.
The metal is brass finished as German silver and then oxidised. German silver is a misleading trade name: it contains no silver at all, only copper, nickel and zinc. What it does have is the right colour and the right hardness to hold fine piercing without the edges going soft.
Oxidising is a deliberate chemical darkening, not tarnish and not dirt. The dark settles into the cut edges and the flat surfaces are polished back, which is exactly what makes a pierced pattern readable from a distance.
Seven colourways are stocked: Green, Aqua, Baby Pink, Mint, Red, Blue and White. The colour is the stone at the centre of each flower; the metal stays the same oxidised silver tone throughout.
This is a cuff rather than a closed bangle, so it does not have to be slid over the knuckles — it opens at the back and closes around the wrist. That makes it far more forgiving on size than a fixed bangle, and it is why a cuff is usually the safer choice when buying for somebody else.
Wear it on its own. A band this wide has no room for a stack beside it, and the jali pattern needs clear space to be seen.
There is no silver in this and it is not sold as silver. It is plated brass with a blackened finish, and the value in it is the piercing work, which is genuinely fiddly to do well at this width.
Oxidising is a deliberate darkening of the surface, not tarnish, and it is the thing that makes the pattern readable. Never clean these with a silver dip — a dip strips the blackening out of the recesses and the design goes flat and grey for good. A dry cotton cloth is all they need. Keep water, perfume and hair spray off them, put them on after you have finished dressing, and store them in a sealed pouch with the air pressed out.
