Meenakari work on a gold-tone kada pair, the colour sunk into the metal rather than painted over it. Sized 2.4 / 2.6 / 2.8 / 2.10.
The face is divided into framed cartouches, each one filled with pastel meenakari and centred on a kundan stone. There is very little plain metal left showing, which is what gives this pair its weight on the arm visually as well as physically.
Meenakari is enamel fired into recesses cut or cast into the metal, so the colour sits flush with the surface instead of standing on top of it. That is why it survives handling in a way painted colour does not, and why the gold between the colours still reads as metal.
It is a broad band, which is the point of a kada: it holds the wrist rather than hanging on it. The face is divided into framed cartouches, each one carrying its own enamel and stone, so the pattern repeats without becoming a blur.
The ornament is packed edge to edge with very little plain metal showing, which is what makes it read as formal rather than everyday. The enamel palette is pastel rather than saturated, which photographs softer and sits more easily with pearls and ivory.
Dense work like this photographs busier than it wears. On the arm the eye reads it as one broad band of colour; it is only up close that the individual panels separate out.
If the outfit is already heavily worked, one of these on a bare wrist reads better than a full stack. It carries a plain kurta as readily as it carries a lehenga, which is more than most wedding pieces manage.
This is wedding jewellery in the plain sense: made to be seen across a hall, under light that is brighter and warmer than daylight. Stone-set gold-tone work is designed for exactly that, which is why it can look heavier in a photograph taken indoors than it does on the arm.
Most people order a kada a quarter size too small, because they measure the wrist rather than the hand. The hand is what the bangle has to pass. Fold the thumb in, measure across the knuckles at the widest point, and use that number. If you are unsure, send us the measurement on WhatsApp before ordering and we will tell you which size to take. This piece is made in 2.4 / 2.6 / 2.8 / 2.10.
To be clear about what this is: a plated finish over brass or mixed metal. There is no hallmarked precious metal in it and the price reflects that. Treated well it holds its look for a long time; worn in the shower it will not.
Put it on after perfume, hairspray and lotion have dried, and take it off before washing your hands or sleeping. Wipe it with a dry cloth after wearing and return it to a sealed pouch. Plated finishes are taken down by moisture and by the alcohol in sprays more than by anything else.
