This cuff is sold as a single piece and is the most unusual thing in the kada range: black velvet embroidered in gold zari, with sequins, small mirrors, natural cowrie shells and soft black pom poms around the edges. It takes the tribal vocabulary of shells and mirrors but sets it on velvet in black and gold rather than the usual bright thread, which makes it read as evening wear rather than festival wear.
The ground is black velvet with a deep pile that swallows light, and the zari work sits on top of it in a lattice of gold thread with leaf motifs worked between the diamonds. Zari is metallic thread, traditionally flattened wire wound on a silk core, and its flat gold catches light in a way that embroidery floss cannot. Sequins are scattered through the lattice, and small round mirrors and pale shells are stitched across the face. Around both edges run alternating cowrie shells and black pom poms, the pom poms soft and matte where everything else is hard and reflective. That contrast between crushed velvet, flat gold and soft wool is the whole idea.
Black and gold makes this far easier to wear than the brightly coloured tribal cuffs. It works with a black or ivory kurta, a plain saree, velvet or raw silk, and it carries into evening wear where a multicoloured thread cuff would not. Wear it alone on a bare wrist with a sleeve ending above it, and let it be the only textile piece in the look.
Festive evenings, Navratri, sangeet and mehendi functions, craft fairs and exhibitions, and gifting to someone who likes textile jewellery but finds the bright tribal palette too much.
This piece is made in one free size rather than in bangle sizes. It is shaped to pass over the hand and sit loosely on the wrist, which is how this style is meant to be worn, so there is nothing to choose when you order.
Free size suits most adult wrists comfortably. It is not adjustable, so if your wrist is unusually slim or broad, message us on WhatsApp before ordering and we will tell you honestly whether it will sit well rather than take an order that comes back.
Velvet cannot be washed or brushed hard: water marks the pile permanently and vigorous brushing flattens it. Shake dust off gently and lift anything stubborn with a soft dry brush in the direction of the pile. Zari tarnishes with moisture, so keep the cuff dry and store it flat in a box rather than crushed, which will flatten both the velvet and the pom poms.
