A close fitting choker made almost entirely of stone: large flat uncut style stones in raised settings form a scalloped lower row, with a finer line of smaller stones running above them around the neckline. The earrings repeat the largest stone in a teardrop plaque, and a round maang tikka completes the set.
Available in 5 colours: Red, Green, Baby Pink, White and Sea Green. The colour refers to the stones; the settings stay the same in every option.
There is almost no visible metal. The stones sit edge to edge in a continuous scallop, so the piece reads as a band of light rather than as jewellery with stones set into it, which is exactly the effect polki bridal sets are built around.
Grading the stones — largest at the centre front, stepping down toward the ends — is what gives the row its curve. Uniform stones would have made a flat band with no sense of a centre.
Each stone is held in a raised collet with a border of tiny stones around it, so the frames themselves sparkle and no dark metal outline interrupts the surface.
A round version of the same setting, on a fine stone chain. Included rather than sold separately, which matters because tikkas are the hardest piece to match after the fact.
High and close at the throat, following the neckline. It needs an open neck and hair away from the face to be seen properly.
Lehengas and heavy silks. Clear stones suit anything; the coloured options are best chosen to echo one colour already in the outfit rather than to match the whole thing.
Polki refers to uncut diamond — a natural stone used more or less as it was found, with only the surface polished, rather than faceted to a modern cut. Because it is not faceted it does not sparkle in the way a brilliant cut does; it glows, with a flat internal shine, and it is always set in a closed backing so light reflects forward rather than passing through. That closed setting is the visual signature of the style, and it is what modern polki inspired jewellery reproduces: flat stones, raised collets, no visible claws. Genuine polki is priced by carat like any diamond, so a piece at an accessible price is reproducing the look rather than the material, which is exactly what makes the style wearable for a single function.
Store it in a pouch away from other pieces so the stones are not scratched. Put it on after perfume and hair spray, and wipe with a dry soft cloth.
