Two rows of hollow silver beads, ribbed like melons and separated by smaller round ones, hang from a black cord. The upper row carries a small pendant — a round mirror in a scrolled frame topped by two peacocks, with a fringe of tiny bells — and the lower row ends in a much larger version: a broad medallion with a big round mirror at its centre, surrounded by dense pierced scrollwork and edged all the way round with bell drops. The matching earrings are small scrolled crosses with bead drops.
Available in Silver — oxidised silver with mirror centres.
Repeating the same pendant at two sizes is a simple idea that does a great deal. The small one introduces the shape and the large one delivers it, so the piece has a build rather than a single moment.
The mirrors are the only smooth surfaces anywhere. Everything else is ribbed, pierced or granulated, so the eye goes straight to the two reflective circles — no colour is needed to create a focal point.
Hollow and deeply ribbed, which is what makes a necklace of this size wearable. Solid beads at that diameter would be far too heavy, and the ribbing also catches light along every bead.
Small ghungroos set right around the medallion rather than only beneath it, so the outline is soft on all sides and the piece sounds faintly as you move.
Two lengths at once, the upper at the base of the throat and the lower well below it. Adjustable on the black cord. Substantial, as this style is, but lighter than it looks.
Plain solid cotton, linen and handloom in black, white, indigo, rust or mustard. This is the whole look at the neck.
A mirror does something a stone cannot: it reflects whatever is around it, so the colour of the piece changes with the outfit it is worn against. A red saree puts red in the medallion and a black one turns it silver. That is why mirror work survives in regions where jewellery has to serve a whole wardrobe rather than a single occasion. It is also flat, light and unbreakable in normal wear, and unlike a set stone there is no claw to loosen — the mirror is seated in a bezel and held all the way around.
Never use a silver dip, which strips the oxidised finish. Wipe with a dry soft cloth, keep the cord dry, and store it flat in a pouch.
