The teardrop, and where it comes from

A teardrop — round at the bottom, pointed at the top — is the oldest pendant outline there is, for the straightforward reason that it is the shape a hanging thing wants to be. Weight gathers low, the suspension point sits at the narrow end, and the piece returns to centre after it swings.

In India the same outline carries a second meaning, because it is also the basis of the paisley. The two shapes are close enough that a plain teardrop pendant reads as quietly traditional without having to carry any ornament at all.

Materials and care

Stones are cubic zirconia and coloured glass. CZ is grown rather than mined and cut like a diamond; the glass is chosen for depth of colour. Neither is a precious stone and neither is described here as one.

Underneath the colour it is brass. That is why it sits with some weight rather than feeling like foil, and why it holds its shape.
