A plain rigid collar in smooth gold-tone wire, open at the back, with nothing on it at all. The surface is left completely unworked — no ribbing, no engraving, no texture — so the band reads as a single clean curve of light around the base of the throat. One end finishes in a small ball; the other is flattened and turned into a shallow hook, which lets the two ends sit against each other rather than simply overlapping.
That hook is the practical difference between this and the ribbed collar in this range. With a hooked end the band holds its set position more reliably, which matters on a rigid piece that is opened and closed by hand each time it goes on. With two ball ends it is quicker to put on but slightly more inclined to drift open. Neither is better; it is a question of whether you would rather have the fastening a little more secure or a little faster.
The smooth surface is the other difference, and it changes the character more than it sounds. A ribbed band breaks light into several bright lines and reads as texture. A smooth round wire catches a single continuous highlight along its length, which is quieter and reads as more modern — closer to a contemporary collar necklace than to a traditional torque, despite being the older shape of the two.
This is the version to choose if you want a hasli that does not announce itself as traditional Indian jewellery. It goes under a shirt collar, over a plain tee, with a kurta or with a saree, and in each case it adds a gold line at the throat and nothing else. It is also the better of the two for layering, because a smooth band sits flat against fine chains without the ribbing catching on them.
The hoop opens and adjusts at the back. Base metal is brass with a gold-tone finish. There is nothing fragile on this piece, nothing that moves and nothing that can tangle, which makes it the easiest thing here to travel with — it can go in a bag without a pouch and arrive as it left.
What you are buying at this price is a plated brass torque with a good finish, not a gold one. Keep it dry, put iue reads so well o and hand cream, wipe it with a dry cloth and the plating will last well. It will not survive a shower or a swimming pool.
A rigid collar has one quality a chain does not, and it is the reason these keep being made. A chain follows whatever the neckline is doing, so against soft or crumpled fabric it disappears into the folds. A band holds its own curve whatever is underneath, which is why a plain torque reads clearly over a shirt or a loose kurta where a fine necklace would be lost. If delicate chains tend to vanish on you, this is the shape that does not.
Finally, on opening and closing it. A rigid collar is set by gently easing the ends apart to pass it round the neck, then letting them come back. It is not meant to be sprung wide each time — metal that is flexed hard and often eventually tires and stops holding its shape. Open iue rly as far as it needs and it will keep its set for years.
This is brass with a gold-tone plating rather than solid gold, which keeps the price where it is and the weight low enough to wear comfortably. Plating is a surface rather than a bulk property, so how long it lasts depends almost entirely on what it meets — perfume, hairspray and sweat all shorten it, while a dry cloth after wearing and a closed pouch between wearings extend it considerably.
Put this on after perfume, hairspray and hand cream, and take it off before washing, swimming or sleeping. Wipe with a dry soft cloth and use a dry soft brush around the stone settings and between any pearls, where a cloth cannot reach. Store it in a zip-lock pouch — which is what the supplier themselves advise, and the single most effective thing for a plated piece, because it keeps humid air off the metal. Never use silver polish, dip cleaners or an ultrasonic cleaner.
