This silver plated leaf hasli collar necklace is the quietest piece in the range and the most modern. There is no pendant, no stonework and no fringe, just a smooth rigid wire that circles the neck and ends in two sculpted leaves that cross at the front. It draws on the traditional hasli form, the rigid collar worn across much of India, and strips it back to a single line. The result is a piece that suits a plain kurta on a working day as naturally as it suits handloom at an exhibition.
The collar is formed from one continuous length of smooth wire, round in section and even in thickness, which holds its own circle rather than draping the way a chain does. At the front the two ends do not meet; instead they pass each other and extend into tapered stems, each finishing in a leaf shaped in low relief with a raised central vein. A small stone sits at the base of one stem. The leaves are given a slightly deeper tone than the polished wire, so they read as a distinct element against the bright silver rather than blending into it. Because the collar is open at the front rather than clasped at the back, the piece is put on by easing it around the neck, and it holds position without adjustment.
This is a layering piece as much as a standalone one. Worn alone over a plain round or square neckline it draws a single clean line at the base of the throat, and it is one of very few Indian collar necklaces that works with a plain t-shirt or a shirt dress. Worn with a longer pendant chain it gives you two lengths without the two pieces tangling, since the collar holds its own position. Keep earrings small; anything long will crowd a collar that sits this high.
Everyday and office wear, college, travel, handloom and khadi dressing, gallery and exhibition outings, and gifting to someone whose taste runs minimal rather than ornate. It is also a good introduction to the hasli shape for anyone who finds the heavily worked versions too much.
Do not squeeze or spring the collar open to put it on, and do not bend it to adjust the fit: a rigid collar is meant to keep its circle, and repeated flexing cracks the plating at the bend. Keep it away from water, perfume, hair spray and sanitiser, wipe it with a dry soft cloth after wearing, and store it flat rather than resting on its edge.
