What hasli means

Hasli takes its name from hansuli, the collarbone, and that is precisely where the form is meant to sit. It is one of the oldest ornaments on the subcontinent and originally a village piece — a heavy, near-rigid neck ring in silver, worn daily and often as a woman's portable savings.

The modern decorative version keeps the position and the close fit while dropping the weight. What survives is the most useful thing about the original: a necklace that sits exactly at the collarbone frames the throat without hanging over the chest, so it reads as graceful even when it is wide.

Flowers worked across the width

Filling the band with small flowers rather than a single motif gives the piece texture at close range and a continuous soft glitter at a distance. It is also forgiving: a repeating field has no centre that can sit slightly off-true on the neck, which is a real risk on any necklace with one large ornament at the front.

How to wear it

Hasli pieces want a bare throat and hair worn up. This one is wide enough to be the only necklace you wear, and formal enough for a wedding without being bridal.

Materials and care

The clear stones are cubic zirconia, sold across India as American Diamond. It is a grown crystal rather than glass, cut on the same wheels as diamond, and it disperses light into slightly more colour than diamond does — which is why a good AD piece reads bright rather than dull.

The body is brass under a gold-tone plating, which is what gives it weight in the hand without the price of the metal it imitates.

Sizing is the usual worry when jewellery is bought for someone else, and it barely applies here. Necklaces and sets fasten with an adjustable chain, earrings need only a pierced lobe, and nothing has to be measured in advance. It arrives boxed and ready to give.
