A peacock stands at the centre of a broad round pendant with its tail fanned into a complete circle, every feather ending in a separate pierced teardrop so the whole disc is openwork rather than solid. Below hang three chains, each carrying a ribbed melon bead and a pierced jhumka with a granulated rim. The matching earrings pair a peacock stud with a jhumka of its own. There are no stones anywhere in the set.
Available in Silver — oxidised silver with no stone setting.
Fanning the tail into a full circle rather than a half is what makes this pendant unusual. A peacock in profile with a semicircular tail is the standard; taking it all the way round turns the bird into the centre of a wheel and gives the piece a completely symmetrical outline.
Every feather tip is cut through, so the pendant is mostly air. That is why a disc this wide can be worn without weight and why it reads clearly against any fabric behind it.
Three, at staggered lengths, each pierced in the same lattice as the tail. They turn a round pendant into a piece with a fall, and they move independently.
Melon shaped beads above each jhumka, deeply grooved so they catch light in stripes. They separate the drops from the disc and give the fall a rhythm.
The pendant sits below the collarbone with the drops falling beneath. Light for its size because of the piercing, and comfortable for a full day.
Plain solid cotton, khadi, linen and handloom. With no stones there is nothing to match, so any colour works — and black or white shows the openwork best.
A solid silver disc of this size would be heavy, expensive and visually flat — a dark mass against the clothing. Piercing it solves all three problems at once. The weight drops sharply, the amount of metal falls with it, and the pattern becomes legible because the fabric or skin behind it supplies contrast that the metal itself cannot. It is why so much traditional Indian silver is cut through rather than engraved on a solid ground, and why a pierced piece often looks larger and more impressive than a solid one of the same cost.
Never use a silver dip, which strips the oxidised finish. Wipe with a dry soft cloth and store flat so the drops do not tangle.
