Beneath a small scalloped bar hangs a wide chandbali, its surface engraved in fine radiating lines and lotus petals, with a peacock standing at each upper corner. At its centre sits a large half moon stone, cut flat and set flush, and pearl clusters hang along the whole lower curve. The matching earrings are the same fan at a smaller size, topped with a paisley stud.
Available in 3 colours: Blue, Baby Pink and Sea Green. The colour refers to the large centre stone.
One very large stone instead of many small ones is a confident choice, and it is what makes this pendant read instantly. The whole engraved fan exists to frame a single piece of colour.
Cutting that stone as a half moon rather than an oval means it echoes the shape of the chandbali it sits in. Stone and setting are the same form at two scales, which is why the pendant looks resolved rather than assembled.
Fine lines radiate outward from the stone across the whole fan, with a border of lotus petals at the edge. It is cut work rather than casting, so the lines have sharp walls that catch light crisply.
Small, at the two upper corners, tails curling into the frame. They give the fan shoulders and mark the piece as traditional despite its very modern single stone centre.
The pendant sits just below the collarbone on a light ball chain. Moderate weight, and the pearl clusters keep the lower edge soft.
Plain cotton, handloom and simple silk. A single strong stone colour means this is a piece to match to an outfit deliberately rather than to wear with everything.
A single big stone is the highest risk element in any design, because there is nothing to distract from it. Three things decide whether it works: the cut has to relate to the setting rather than sit inside it arbitrarily, the colour has to be consistent right across the surface with no cloudy patches, and it has to sit low enough in the bezel that the edge is protected. Where all three hold, a single stone gives a piece more presence than a dozen small ones could, and it is also easier to live with, because there is only one thing to keep clean and nothing small to work loose.
Never use a silver dip, which strips the oxidised finish. Wipe with a dry soft cloth and store flat so the pearl clusters are not crushed.
