This oxidised temple shield necklace set is the fullest piece in this range: a twin-row chain of flower and lattice links, a stone-set bar across the top of the pendant, and a broad shield hung beneath it worked with peacocks and paisley. A fringe of white beads runs along the lower edge and around the matching earrings. At roughly 84 g it has genuine weight, and it is built to be the entire jewellery statement for a wedding or a major festival rather than an everyday piece.
The chain runs in two parallel rows: one of open flowers with a stone at each centre, the other of small lattice-worked discs, so the two textures alternate as the eye travels down. They converge on a horizontal bar set with a line of dark stones, and the pendant hangs from that bar rather than from the chain itself, a construction taken from older temple jewellery that keeps a heavy pendant lying flat instead of tipping forward. The shield is dense with silver scrollwork, with peacocks curving in from both sides towards a flower of pale stones at the centre, and paisley forms filling the space around them. Clusters of small white beads hang from the lower curve. The earrings are built to the same logic, a fanned body over a stone flower with its own bead fringe below.
A set this full needs everything else to stand down. Wear it over a plain saree blouse with no neckline embroidery, in silk, chanderi or a heavy cotton, and keep the colour solid. Ivory, black, deep green and maroon all let the silver read clearly. Hair should be up so the earrings show. Do not add a second necklace, and keep bangles plain silver-tone rather than stone-set, or the wrists will start competing with the neck.
Weddings and receptions, sangeet and mehendi evenings, Navratri and Durga Puja, and gifting for a wedding in the family. It suits anyone who wants the presence of real temple silver without its cost or its weight in solid metal.
Store the necklace and earrings flat and apart so the two bead fringes do not tangle together. Keep the set away from water, perfume, hair spray and sanitiser, and put it on after you have finished dressing. Wipe the metal with a dry soft cloth after wearing, using a dry brush for the deeper scrollwork rather than pressing a cloth into it.
