This oxidised temple deity pendant necklace is the most sculptural piece in the range. Rather than a flat disc with a motif stamped into it, the pendant is built in layers: a deity figure standing inside a ring frame, two attendant figures kneeling at either side, and a beaded platform beneath carrying a fringe of white pearl drops. Flower clusters of pale stones sit where the pendant meets the chain. It is made in German silver with a brass chain, and the whole piece is oxidised so the figures read clearly in relief.
The centre of the pendant is a raised circular frame, worked like a ring of rope, and inside it a multi-armed deity figure stands in a dancing posture with attributes held in each hand. Every part is modelled rather than engraved, so the figure catches light from different angles as you move. On either side, a smaller kneeling figure faces inwards, and above them a curl of scrollwork closes the composition. Below the frame runs a horizontal bar of dense beading, from which a row of small white pearl-look beads hangs, with two larger rosettes at the outer corners carrying their own bead clusters. The shoulders of the pendant are marked by five-petal stone flowers in a pale shade, which are the only colour in an otherwise entirely silver piece. The chain above is a plain strand of round oxidised beads.
Devotional jewellery of this weight belongs with traditional fabric. Wear it over a plain silk or cotton saree blouse, or a simple kurta with an open neckline, and let the pendant have the whole space below the collarbone to itself. Solid colours work best, particularly ivory, black, mustard and deep red, because the pendant is almost entirely silver and needs contrast behind it. Keep earrings small and oxidised, and skip a second chain entirely.
Temple visits, pujas and ceremonies at home, Navratri and Durga Puja, festival mornings, classical dance and music performances, and gifting to someone who wears devotional jewellery. It is a statement piece rather than an everyday one.
Keep the necklace away from water, perfume, hair spray, sanitiser and kumkum; the last of these settles into modelled figure work and is very difficult to clean out. Wipe the metal with a dry soft cloth after wearing and use a dry soft brush around the figures rather than pressing a cloth into them. Store it flat in its pouch with the bead fringes supported.
