Product Description

The elements on this hasli are taweez — the small engraved boxes that have been worn across India, Central Asia and the Middle East for centuries. Traditionally a taweez held something: a written prayer, a verse, a grain of something from a particular place. As jewellery the form survived long after the contents stopped mattering, and it is now one of the most recognisable shapes in tribal and Banjara silver.

Here five of them are strung along a plain silver-tone rigid hoop, alternating with fluted spacer beads shaped like small spinning tops. The boxes are engraved on their faces with a simple scrolling motif and have raised collars at each end; the spacers are ribbed, so the whole strung section alternates smooth engraved faces with sharply ridged beads. All of it is oxidised — blackened and then polished back, so the darkness stays in the engraved lines and the recesses while the raised surfaces come up bright.

The hoop itself is deliberately plain and much lighter in tone than the elements on it. That contrast is doing real work: a thin bright wire makes the oxidised boxes read as the subject of the piece, where a decorated hoop would have turned it into a competition. The hoop ends in two small ball finials and adjusts at the back.

Matching stud earrings come with the set, and they repeat the amulet box exactly — the same engraved face, the same collars, at a size that sits on the lobe without hanging. That is a better pairing than a drop earring would be, because the necklace is already a row of repeated shapes, and repeating the shape once more at the ear ties the set together.

This is the easiest of the hasli here to wear day to day. It is light, it sits high and close, it has nothing fragile on it, and oxidised silver tone against a plain cotton or linen kurta is about as unfussy as traditional Indian jewellery gets. It also suits a plain black or white shirt, which most of the large collar pieces do not. If you are buying a first hasli to find out whether you like the shape, buy this one.

It also layers, which almost nothing else in this range does. Because the hoop sits high and the elements are small, a longer chain or a pendant can hang below it without the two colliding — keep the longer piece oxidised or silver-toned so the tones agree, and let the hasli be the one with texture. Worn that way it reads as the top note of a stack rather than as a single statement, which is a more modern way of wearing a very old shape.

One caution on the finish. Oxidation is a surface treatment, and the single fastest way to ruin it is a silver-polishing cloth or a dip cleaner, both of which are designed to strip exactly the blackening that makes the piece legible. A plated oxidised item never needs either. A dry soft cloth on the bright areas and a dry soft brush through the engraved lines is the whole routine.

Base metal is brass with an oxidised silver-tone finish. The set is listed for WhatsApp enquiry rather than direct checkout, so we can confirm stock before you order.

About the Oxidised Finish

This is brass given an oxidised, antique-silver finish rather than solid silver. The metal is darkened and the raised surfaces are then polished back, so the blackening stays in the recesses while the high points stay bright. That contrast is the whole point of oxidised work — it is what makes every engraved line and pierced opening read separately instead of dissolving into one shiny surface, and it means small variations between pieces are normal rather than faults.

Care

Put this on after perfume, hairspray and hand cream, and take it off before washing, swimming or sleeping. Wipe with a dry soft cloth and use a dry soft brush around the stone settings and between any pearls, where a cloth cannot reach. Store it in a zip-lock pouch — which is what the supplier themselves advise, and the single most effective thing for a plated piece, because it keeps humid air off the metal. Never use silver polish, dip cleaners or an ultrasonic cleaner.

Frequently Asked Questions

A small engraved box, traditionally worn to hold a written prayer or a token. The form outlived the practice and is now one of the standard shapes in tribal and Banjara silver.
Yes. Matching studs that repeat the amulet box shape at lobe size, so nothing hangs.
No. It is brass with an oxidised silver-tone finish.
It is the most wearable piece in this range — light, close to the neck, nothing fragile on it, and it suits a plain cotton kurta or a plain shirt equally.
No. They are solid decorative elements, not functional lockets.
The rigid hoop opens at the back and adjusts, with small ball finials at the ends.
Deliberately. A plain bright wire makes the oxidised boxes read as the subject; a decorated hoop would compete with them.
The blackening sits in the engraved lines and recesses and the raised areas are meant to stay bright, so normal wear keeps the contrast rather than removing it. Avoid polish and dip cleaners, which strip it.
Plain cotton or linen, in almost any colour, and a simple neckline. It is unfussy by design.
