This oxidised peacock link necklace is made entirely of repeating peacock motifs, joined one to the next so the design carries all the way around the neck instead of concentrating in a single pendant. Each bird is set beside a faceted stone and finished with a cluster of tiny beads at its tail, and the whole line is given an antique silver-tone oxidised finish. It sits at the base of the neck, which makes it one of the easier statement pieces to wear under a saree pallu or with a high-necked blouse.
The construction is what distinguishes this piece. Rather than hanging ornament from a plain chain, the peacocks themselves are the chain: each link is a bird in profile with a stamped, fanned tail, connected to its neighbour through a round stone in a raised silver mount. Smaller teardrop stones fill the gaps above, so there is colour along the full length rather than only at the front. Below each bird hang two or three small round beads that swing slightly as you move and keep the piece from looking rigid. The oxidised finish settles into the stamped feather lines and the beaded mounts, which is what gives the metal its depth and stops it reading as flat silver. At the back, a plain chain with a hook and a length of extender links lets you shorten or lengthen the fit.
Because it sits high and close, this necklace works where a long one will not: a high-necked blouse, a closed-collar kurta, or a saree worn with the pallu pinned. Solid colours suit it best, and an outfit in ivory, black, mustard or deep green lets the stones read clearly. Pair it with small studs or short jhumkas rather than long earrings, since the necklace already occupies the space under the jaw. If you want to wear bangles, keep them plain oxidised silver rather than stone-set.
Festive evenings, parties and receptions, Navratri and Diwali, office celebrations where you want one strong piece, and gifting to someone who wears oxidised jewellery regularly. It also works well for anyone who finds long necklaces awkward with their usual necklines.
Keep the necklace away from water, perfume, hair spray and sanitiser, which dull an oxidised finish and can loosen stone settings over time. Put it on after you have finished dressing and take it off before you wash. Wipe it with a dry soft cloth after wearing, working around rather than over the stones, and store it flat in its pouch so the bead drops do not catch on other jewellery.
