This oxidised long haram necklace set is the most formal shape in Indian jewellery: the haram is the long ceremonial necklace worn for weddings and temple occasions, falling well below the collarbone. Here the chain is built from stone-set floral links, and it ends in a large oval pendant whose centre is a flower of petal-cut stones surrounded by pierced scrollwork. The earrings are unusually long, three tiers of stonework ending in pearl drops. It is offered in eight colours.
Every link in the chain is a small flower or leaf cluster with stones set into it, joined directly to the next, so the necklace carries colour from the back of the neck all the way down. Partway along, a wider scrolled connector marks the transition, and below it the pendant hangs as a tall oval. Its centre is a flower of six petal-cut stones around a round centre stone; around that, silver scrollwork curls outward and is pierced through so light passes behind it; and the outer rim is edged with a fine beaded line. Small pearl drops hang from the bottom in clusters. The earrings mirror the construction, each built as three descending tiers of stone-set silver with pearls at the lowest edge, long enough to balance a necklace of this length. Available in Green, Baby Pink, Blue, Yellow, Mint, White, Black and Multi.
A haram needs an open, plain neckline and a fabric with some weight behind it. Silk, brocade and heavy cotton all carry it; a light chiffon will not. Green is the most traditional for weddings, White and Mint read lightest for daytime, Black is the most versatile, and Multi combines several shades in one piece. Wear your hair up, because earrings this long are lost against loose hair, and add nothing else at the neck.
Weddings and receptions, sangeet and mehendi evenings, temple ceremonies, Navratri and Durga Puja, and gifting for a wedding in the family. It is a full formal set rather than an everyday piece.
Keep the set away from water, perfume, hair spray and sanitiser, all of which dull the finish and can loosen the many small settings. Clean the pierced scrollwork with a dry soft brush rather than a cloth. Store the haram laid flat so the long chain does not kink, with the earrings kept separately.
