This gold plated long haar is a traditional bridal-style necklace built from triple rows of small gold beads, broken at intervals by round floral plates and finished with a large sunburst pendant at the centre of the chest. Matching earrings are included, and the back closes with an adjustable thread tie rather than a fixed clasp, so the length can be set to suit the neckline you are wearing. It is designed for the occasions that call for gold across the chest rather than a single pendant at the throat.
The chain is the bulk of the design. Three parallel rows of small round beads run down each side, held in line by flat floral medallions spaced along their length, each one worked with concentric rings radiating from a raised centre. That repeated flower shape is what ties the piece together, because the pendant is the same motif enlarged: a broad disc of fine ridged goldwork circling a domed centre, edged with a row of small beads and finished with a single drop hanging beneath it. The earrings repeat the flower once more, as a stud with a larger floral disc below and a drop at the bottom. Everything carries a warm, slightly antique gold tone rather than a bright modern yellow, which is what lets the ridged texture read as depth instead of glare. At the back, the bead rows gather into a cord that ties, with a tassel at the end.
A long haar wants an open, plain neckline. It is at its best over a silk saree with an unembroidered blouse, or a plain anarkali, and it should be the only piece at the neck. Traditional shades suit it, particularly red, maroon, deep green and ivory, and it also lifts a plain gold or beige outfit that has nothing else going on. Because the tie is adjustable, you can raise the pendant to sit higher with a closed blouse or lower it over an open neckline. Keep bangles gold-toned, and let the earrings do the work at the ear rather than adding anything further.
Weddings, receptions and sangeet evenings, engagement functions, festivals such as Diwali and Durga Puja, and gifting for a wedding in the family. It is the kind of set bought for the occasions where a small pendant would be lost against heavy clothing.
Keep the set dry and away from perfume, hair spray, sanitiser and water, all of which shorten the life of gold plating. Put it on last when dressing and take it off first at the end of the evening. Wipe the metal with a dry soft cloth afterwards, store the haar flat in its pouch so the three bead rows do not twist together, and keep the earrings separate so their posts do not scratch the plating.
