This German silver peacock long necklace is pure metalwork with no stones at all, and its entire effect rests on one idea: a peacock with its tail fully open, built as a fan of layered feather plates that widens as it descends. The chain above is made of pierced filigree flower discs linked edge to edge, and small ghungroo bells hang around the tail's outer edge. It belongs to the old tradition of all-silver temple and tribal jewellery, where the craft of the metal is the ornament rather than the colour set into it.
The peacock's body sits at the top of the pendant, modelled in the round with a smooth curved neck, a raised crest and a beak turned to one side, so the bird reads as a sculpture rather than a flat silhouette. Below it the tail opens into five descending tiers, each built from individually shaped feather plates with a stamped eye at the tip, overlapping like roof tiles so the whole fan has real depth rather than being a single cut sheet. That layering is what makes the pendant catch light differently as you move. Clusters of tiny ghungroo bells hang from the outer edge of each tier and along the bottom, and they sound faintly as you walk. The chain discs are cut right through into open flowers, linked directly to one another without any plain chain between them.
All-metal jewellery of this scale wants traditional handloom fabric behind it. It is at its best over a plain cotton or silk saree, khadi, or a solid deep-coloured kurta, and it needs the neckline kept clear so the full width of the tail is visible. Because there is no stone colour to match, it works across a far wider wardrobe than a coloured piece. Keep earrings to plain silver studs and add nothing else at the neck.
Festival days, temple visits, classical dance and music performances, exhibitions and craft fairs, Navratri, and gifting to someone who appreciates traditional silverwork. It is a statement piece and reads as craft rather than costume.
The layered feather plates and the pierced discs both trap dust, so clean with a dry soft brush rather than a cloth, which catches between the tiers. Keep the necklace away from water, perfume, hair spray, sanitiser and kumkum. Store it flat in its pouch so the tail is supported and the bells are not crushed against harder jewellery.
