The fan, and how old it is

A fan of radiating lines spreading from a single point is among the most widely travelled motifs in ornament. It appears as the palmette in Greek work, as the shell in Roman, as the peacock tail across South Asia, and it survives everywhere because it solves a universal problem: how to fill a widening space with a pattern that stays regular as it grows.

On a pendant the fan has a second advantage. It is wide at the bottom and narrow at the top, which is exactly the weight distribution a hanging ornament needs, so the shape is structurally as well as visually sound.

Why the stones are deep red

Ruby red is the most saturated colour that still reads as traditional on Indian jewellery, and on a small pendant saturation matters more than size. A pale stone at this scale would vanish against skin; a deep one holds its colour and gives the piece presence out of proportion to the metal involved.

How to wear it

Materials and care

The clear stones are cubic zirconia, sold across India as American Diamond. It is a grown crystal rather than glass, cut on the same wheels as diamond, and it disperses light into slightly more colour than diamond does — which is why a good AD piece reads bright rather than dull.

The metal is brass with a gold-tone finish over it, not gold, and nothing on this page describes it as gold.

These arrive in small runs. When a colour sells through it is usually gone rather than reordered, because the supplier moves on to the next design. That is why availability is confirmed by hand before an order is taken rather than promised by a stock counter.
