Nine discs link edge to edge around the neckline, each ringed by three rows of tiny silver beads and each carrying a small figure in relief — an elephant with a raised trunk on most, a seated Lakshmi at the centre — above a single oval stone. An extender chain adjusts the fit. The matching earrings pair a small stone stud with a disc of the same design.
Available in 9 colours: Ruby, Baby Pink, Red, White, Green, Black, Multi Color, Sea Green and Blue. The colour refers to the oval stone in each disc.
Changing the figure at the centre disc rather than repeating one motif all the way round is a small decision with a large effect. The elephants march toward the front and Lakshmi sits where they meet, so the necklace has a story and a destination rather than being a row of identical units.
The beaded rims are three rows deep on every disc. That is a lot of applied metal for a piece this size, and it is what makes the outline read as scalloped from a distance rather than as a plain chain of circles.
Small, in raised relief, with enough definition to read at arm's length — the elephants have visible trunks, ears and caparisons, which a shallower casting would have lost.
One oval per disc, set low so nothing catches. Nine colour options, and because there is only one stone per disc the colour reads as a repeating dot rather than a mass.
Close at the base of the throat, with an extender chain at the back. The discs hinge at each join, so the row curves with the neck.
Plain solid cotton, handloom and simple silk. Green and ruby are the traditional choices; black and white are the ones that go with anything.
The elephant is the most auspicious animal in Indian ornament, associated with Ganesha, with royalty and with Lakshmi herself — who in the Gaja Lakshmi form is shown flanked by two elephants pouring water over her. That specific composition is one of the oldest in Indian art and it is exactly what a necklace like this one reproduces in miniature: elephants approaching a central seated goddess. Whether or not a wearer knows the reference, it is the reason the arrangement feels resolved, because it is a composition that has been refined over roughly two thousand years.
Never use a silver dip, which strips the oxidised finish and flattens the relief. Wipe with a dry soft cloth and store flat.
