Many strands of small white seed pearls gather at the shoulders and run to a large engraved silver disc, its surface cut with swirling lines and centred on a flower of multicoloured stones set in a ring. An elephant stands on each upper corner of the disc. Below hangs a wide fan filled with translucent enamel panels, each outlined in silver and edged all round with seed pearls.
Available in 3 colours: Ruby, Red and White. The colour refers to the enamel fan and the stone flower.
The proportions are unusual. A very wide pendant on very fine pearl strands puts all the visual weight at the bottom and leaves the top almost invisible, which is the opposite of most necklaces and the reason this one reads as a single bold object at the chest.
The enamel fan below the disc is translucent rather than opaque, so light passes into it. Against the flat engraved silver above, that depth is the contrast the design is built on.
A ring of small stones in many colours around a central cluster, set into the engraved disc. It is the only concentrated colour in the upper half and it sits exactly at the centre.
Two, standing on the shoulders of the disc facing inward, which frames the composition and gives the pendant a top edge that would otherwise be a plain curve.
The pendant sits at the centre of the chest. The pearl strands spread the weight across the shoulders, which matters here because the pendant is heavy for its size.
Plain solid fabrics with an open neckline — black, white, indigo and rust. This is a single statement piece and needs nothing else at the neck.
Most enamel used in jewellery is opaque: colour sits on the metal and stops there. Translucent enamel is laid over a prepared metal surface that is often engraved or textured first, so light passes through the colour, reflects off the metal beneath and comes back out. The result has visible depth, and the pattern underneath shows through as a shadow within the colour. It is harder to fire successfully, because any impurity or bubble shows, and it cannot be repaired the way an opaque coat can be touched in. Where you see it done well, it is usually the most expensive element of the piece.
Never use a silver dip. Keep the enamel and pearls away from water and perfume, wipe with a dry soft cloth, and store flat so the strands do not tangle.
