The chain is made of elephants — small silver figures linked trunk to tail, each set with a coloured stone, marching down both sides. They lead to a pendant where a larger elephant stands above a fan shaped stone, cut flat and set in a silver frame, with a border of multicoloured teardrops in the navratna manner and pearl clusters beneath. The matching earrings are the same fan stone under a small stone crown.
Available in 7 colours: Red, White, Blue, Sea Green, Baby Pink, Ruby and Green. The colour refers to the large fan stone.
Building the chain itself from elephants is what makes this piece memorable. Most elephant designs put one figure on a pendant; here there are a dozen, walking toward the front, so the motif is the necklace rather than a detail on it.
The fan shaped stone is unusual too — a broad semicircle rather than an oval or a teardrop, which gives the pendant a flat top for the elephant to stand on and a wide base for the fringe.
Teardrops in many colours set around the fan stone, pointing outward. They frame the single large stone with the widest possible range of colour, so the pendant works against almost any outfit.
Each small elephant carries a stone of its own, in a different colour from its neighbour, so the chain carries the same multicoloured idea as the pendant border.
The pendant sits below the collarbone. Moderate weight, and the linked figures hinge so the chain lies flat.
Plain solid cotton, handloom and simple silk. With a multicoloured border almost any outfit shade picks up something in it, so the fan stone colour is the only real decision.
A chain made from figures rather than links is considerably more work than it appears. Every figure has to be cast individually, cleaned, set with its stone, and then linked at exactly the right points so the chain hangs straight and each figure faces the same way. A plain link chain of the same length might involve a tenth of the labour. The reward is that the necklace holds interest along its whole length and from every angle, including from behind, where most necklaces have nothing to offer — and that is precisely where a figural chain earns its cost.
Never use a silver dip, which strips the oxidised finish and flattens the figures. Wipe with a dry soft cloth and store flat.
