Product Description

This is the heaviest-looking piece in the dual-tone group and the one with the most work in it. The band is a thick rigid collar, engraved along its whole length and then overlaid with gold-tone elements — lotus heads, fluted shell forms, and raised collars that divide the curve into sections. Set into and between all of it are deep red stones, round and oval, running almost continuously from one end to the other rather than appearing at intervals.

The density is the point. Where the green dual-tone hasli in this range places three flower clusters along a mostly plain band, this one fills the band, so from a distance it reads as a solid line of red and gold rather than as a silver collar with decoration on it. That makes it a far stronger piece and a less casual one; it belongs to an occasion rather than to an ordinary day.

The earrings are chandbali, and they are a substantial pair in their own right. Each has a round top set with a red stone inside a gold floral surround, and below it a crescent — the chand that gives the style its name — set with more red stones and gold flower heads, finished with small white pearl drops along the lower edge. Chandbali came into Indian jewellery through Hyderabad and the Deccan courts and has stayed in use ever since, because the crescent shape frames the face in a way almost nothing else does.

The stones are Monalisa glass, which gives red a depth that cut zirconia does not: slightly cloudy, lit from inside, closer to how an old ruby reads than a modern one. Against gold and oxidised silver together that depth is what holds the three colours apart.

The collar is rigid and fastens with a sliding black braided cord at the back, so it can be worn high at the throat or dropped slightly. Wear it with a plain neckline and let it carry the look — it does not need bangles to be stacked beside it. Red and gold against black, deep green, cream or any undyed natural fabric is where it is strongest.

A word on wearing a stone-set rigid collar, because it behaves differently from a chain. The stones sit on the outer face of the band and nothing rests against the skin except smooth metal, so there is nothing to catch or scratch. But a rigid collar does not drape, which means it will not follow a very high neckline — against a closed collar or a tightly draped dupatta it rides forward and stands away. Worn over a scoop or a round neck, or against bare skin, it sits exactly where it should.

The earrings also want a moment's thought at this weight. A chandbali of this size is noticeably heavier on the lobe than a stud, and worn for a full day it will be felt. For a long event, a supportive earring back is worth using, and if your piercings are older or stretched it is worth trying the pair on before committing to a whole evening in them.

Supplier stock is very limited, so this is listed for WhatsApp enquiry rather than direct checkout.

About the Dual-Tone Finish

Dual-tone means two platings on one piece — a bright silver tone and a warm gold tone, applied to different parts of the same design so each section reads separately. It is harder than a single finish because the two have to be masked off from one another, and it is why these pieces show their detail so clearly: the eye separates the gold elements from the silver ones before it has read a single stone. The base metal underneath is brass, so this is plating rather than solid gold or silver.

Care

Put this on after perfume, hairspray and hand cream, and take it off before washing, swimming or sleeping. Wipe with a dry soft cloth and use a dry soft brush around the stone settings and between any pearls, where a cloth cannot reach. Store it in a zip-lock pouch — which is what the supplier themselves advise, and the single most effective thing for a plated piece, because it keeps humid air off the metal. Never use silver polish, dip cleaners or an ultrasonic cleaner.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes — a substantial pair of chandbali, with a stone-set round top, a crescent below and small pearl drops.
An earring built around a crescent, the chand. It came into Indian jewellery through Hyderabad and the Deccan courts and stayed because the shape frames the face so well.
Density. This one is set with stones almost continuously along the whole band; the green one places three flower clusters on a mostly plain band. This is the occasion piece of the two.
No. They are Monalisa glass stones in a ruby red, which reads deeper and slightly cloudier than cut zirconia — closer to how an old ruby looks.
A sliding black braided cord at the back. The collar itself is rigid.
Neither. It is brass carrying two platings, gold tone and oxidised silver tone.
A plain neckline in black, deep green, cream or an undyed natural fabric. It is strong enough to carry a look on its own.
It looks heavier than it is. The body is brass rather than solid metal, so the weight is manageable through an evening.
Pouched and flat, with the earrings separate so the pearl drops are not pressed against the collar.
