A hasli is a rigid collar that holds its own curve rather than draping, and this one is broad and confident. Bands of oxidised silver and gold run around it, studded with rows of small round stones in many colours, with a fringe of stone set florets along the lower edge. The matching earrings are square panels in the same treatment.
Available in 3 colours: Green, White and Red. The colour refers to the dominant stone shade.
A hasli sits differently from any other necklace. Because it keeps its shape, it stands slightly away from the throat rather than following it, which gives it real presence and makes it read as a statement the moment it goes on.
The multicolour stone rows are what stop it becoming severe. A plain metal collar of this width can look heavy; filling it with small points of colour breaks the surface and keeps the eye moving around the curve.
Gold and oxidised silver alternate in bands around the collar rather than mixing, so each metal keeps a clear area of its own. That separation is what makes dual tone work look deliberate rather than muddled, and it means the piece sits comfortably with either gold or silver bangles.
Closed with a black thread dori and tassel, so the collar can be tied snug or slightly loose. Necessary on a rigid piece, since a fixed clasp would only fit one size of neck.
This is the heaviest style we carry in necklaces, as a collar of this width must be. It is a ceremony piece rather than an all day one.
A plain solid outfit with an open neckline — the collar needs bare skin around it to read. Black, deep green, mustard and white all work. Keep earrings to the matching pair and skip everything else at the neck.
The hasli takes its name from the collarbone and is among the oldest necklace forms in India, appearing in tribal silver across Rajasthan, Gujarat and the Deccan long before it entered urban jewellery. Traditionally it was made solid and worn as portable wealth, which is why antique examples are so heavy. Modern versions keep the shape but build it hollow, which is the only reason a collar this wide is wearable at all.
Store it flat in a pouch, keep the dori dry, put it on after perfume and wipe with a dry soft cloth only.
