A broad oval pendant worked in silver and gold carries a cluster of green kundan stones at its centre, with a row of pointed leaf drops hanging beneath it, each tipped with a small cluster of pearls. It hangs from a matar mala — a ball chain — and comes with a matching pair of earrings. Four colourways.
Matar mala means pea chain, and that is exactly what it is: a line of small round beads rather than interlocking links. It behaves differently from a flat chain — it has no front or back, so it cannot twist the wrong way round during the day, and it catches light as a series of points rather than a continuous ribbon. For a pendant with a heavy decorated face, a round-bead chain is also the more comfortable choice, because nothing presses an edge against the neck.
The stones are set flat and fitted to their compartments rather than domed and dropped into collets — the kundan manner — so the colour reads as a continuous plane broken only by thin metal lines. Green is the warm counterpart to gold rather than its opposite, which is why it has been the default stone colour in traditional Indian goldwork for centuries, and against the silver half of a dual-tone piece it stays cool enough to separate clearly.
The drops beneath the pendant are pointed leaf shapes, each finished with a small bunch of pearls. Hanging elements give a necklace movement that a rigid pendant cannot, and tipping each one with pearl means the bottom edge of the piece is defined by soft bright points rather than fading out into metal.
Multi, White (two variants) and Ruby Red. Colour availability changes quickly and is confirmed before payment.
A clear neckline and hair up or to one side. It suits silk, gold-bordered cotton, ivory, maroon and green, and is a natural festival and wedding-guest choice. The matching earrings are included, so nothing else is needed above the neck.
Festivals, weddings, receptions, pujas and daytime functions.
Type: Pendant necklace set. Metal: Brass. Finish: Dual tone, gold and silver plating. Stones: Monalisa kundan-set. Chain: Matar mala ball chain. Includes: necklace and matching earrings. Available in 4 colourways.
Dual-tone means two platings on one piece — a bright silver tone and a warm gold tone, applied to different parts of the same design so each section reads separately. It is harder than a single finish because the two have to be masked off from one another, and it is why these pieces show their detail so clearly: the eye separates the gold elements from the silver ones before it has read a single stone. The base metal underneath is brass, so this is plating rather than solid gold or silver.
Put this on after perfume, hairspray and hand cream, and take it off before washing, swimming or sleeping. Wipe with a dry soft cloth and use a dry soft brush around the stone settings and between any pearls, where a cloth cannot reach. Store it in a zip-lock pouch — which is what the supplier themselves advise, and the single most effective thing for a plated piece, because it keeps humid air off the metal. Never use silver polish, dip cleaners or an ultrasonic cleaner.
