A round disc engraved in fine radiating lines carries a small green stone at its centre, with a gold elephant perched at its base and a large smooth green teardrop hanging beneath. It sits on a matar mala ball chain and comes with matching earrings — gold florets above long green teardrops. Six colourways.
The two halves of this pendant do opposite things with light. The disc above is cut in fine radiating lines that scatter it into dozens of small points; the teardrop below is polished to a single smooth curve that holds one broad highlight. Putting a busy surface directly above a plain one is what gives the piece depth without any extra colour — the eye reads texture, then stillness.
A small gold elephant sits where the disc meets the drop, doing the structural job of a connector while also being the only figurative element on the piece. Elephants carry specific meaning in Indian ornament — Gajalakshmi, the ceremonial procession, the auspicious arrival — rather than being decorative animals, and placing one at the hinge of a pendant is a very old arrangement.
The teardrop is a cabochon, domed rather than faceted. Faceting needs a transparent stone and directional light; a cabochon reflects off its curve and so keeps its colour under ordinary indoor light and in photographs. For a deep opaque green at this size that is the correct choice.
Sea Green, Baby Pink, Ruby Red, Green, Black and White. Availability is confirmed before payment.
A clear neckline and hair up. The pendant is long and the drop is substantial, so let it be the only thing at the neck. Silk, gold-bordered cotton, ivory, maroon and green.
Weddings, receptions, festivals, pujas and evening functions.
Type: Pendant necklace set. Metal: Brass. Finish: Dual tone, gold and silver plating. Stones: Monalisa with paachi stones. Chain: Matar mala ball chain. Includes: necklace and matching earrings. Available in 6 colourways.
Dual-tone means two platings on one piece — a bright silver tone and a warm gold tone, applied to different parts of the same design so each section reads separately. It is harder than a single finish because the two have to be masked off from one another, and it is why these pieces show their detail so clearly: the eye separates the gold elements from the silver ones before it has read a single stone. The base metal underneath is brass, so this is plating rather than solid gold or silver.
Put this on after perfume, hairspray and hand cream, and take it off before washing, swimming or sleeping. Wipe with a dry soft cloth and use a dry soft brush around the stone settings and between any pearls, where a cloth cannot reach. Store it in a zip-lock pouch — which is what the supplier themselves advise, and the single most effective thing for a plated piece, because it keeps humid air off the metal. Never use silver polish, dip cleaners or an ultrasonic cleaner.
