A row of mango shaped motifs in antique gold, each chased with a fine pattern and set with a small red or green stone, alternating with ribbed gold beads along a green silk cord. At the front hangs a round medallion of pierced jali work with a red stone at its centre and a fringe of small gold beads beneath. The cord is bound with red thread and white pearl knots at intervals and finishes in a tassel of green and maroon beads. The matching earrings are the same medallion in miniature.
Available in Red — red and green stones in an antique gold finish.
The silk cord is doing what a metal chain normally would, and it changes the whole character of the piece. It is softer against the neck, it adjusts to any length, and the green of the thread sits with the green stones in a way that gold links never could.
Alternating motifs with plain beads rather than linking them directly is a traditional construction that gives the row breathing space. Each mango is read individually instead of merging into its neighbour.
Jali means a pierced screen, and the medallion is cut through in a fine lattice so light passes behind it. It is the reason the pendant looks lighter than a solid disc of the same size.
Bound with red thread and pearl knots, ending in a beaded tassel that slides to shorten or lengthen the necklace. No clasp to fail and no fixed size.
At the base of the throat by default, and longer if you let out the cord. Genuinely light, which is unusual for a piece with this much visible gold.
Silk sarees and traditional dressing, especially in green, red, cream or mustard. The visible cord means it suits daytime functions as easily as evening ones.
Stringing an ornament on silk or cotton rather than metal is the older method, and in several regions it never stopped. There are practical reasons: a thread carries weight without adding any of its own, it will not kink or snap at a weak link, and it can be restrung at home for a fraction of the cost of repairing a chain. It also lets one piece serve several lengths, which matters when a necklace has to work with a high blouse at one function and an open neckline at the next. The only care it needs is to be kept dry and to be untied rather than pulled over the head.
Keep the silk cord dry and untie it rather than pulling the necklace over your head. Store it flat and wipe the metal with a dry soft cloth.
