An antique finish is a deliberately darkened plating, with the recesses left deeper in tone than the raised surfaces. The effect is to make carving and relief read clearly from a distance, because the shadows are built into the metal rather than relying on the light in the room. Bright polish does the opposite — it flattens detail into glare.
